Suggest Ways To Manage Pain When Suffering From Osteoarthritis

I have muscle weakness of quadriceps, hamstring, and shoulder muscles. NSAIDs, specifically Advil and excedrin (two tabs excedrin in am and two tabs Advil in pm) help a great deal but with diagnosed renal insufficiency should not take these NSAID. Also I am scheduled.. for rt knee replacement 6/1/15. Also have rt wrist pain and arm involvement which causes minor tingling of fingers and forearm pain with middle finger often locking in place. Sleeping on rt side soon results arm asleep sensation. I believe I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis.my primary md feels it is my age. Perhaps it is, but it is difficult to live with. Stairs are a big problem as are even slight declines in terrain. Just thought I would ask an opinion or a socialist specialty I might confer with

Hello,

You have history of osteoarthritis. Presently you are diagnosed with renal insufficiency due to which you are unable to take NSAIDS. Presently, you are having pain and tingling on your wrist, forearm and fingers. You have problem in climbing stairs also. You are suggested to lose weight if obese, get connected to a Physical therapist. Doing regular exercises and walking (in the morning and evening) will help to reduce pain as the joints will get more flexible.

Avoid sedentary lifestyle and do wrist exercises, knitting is also a very good exercise; gradually the pain will get reduced. You can include anti -inflammatory food like nuts and seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, almonds, Omega-3 fatty acids, etc. in your regular diet. Blueberries, apples, tomatoes are good for providing relief from arthritis pain. Also take olive oil, black beans, pinto beans, chickpeas, and soybeans.

Take well cooked whole grains. Cocoa which is present in dark chocolate is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, take dark chocolate. Red peppers are rich in Vitamin C and hence, good for health. You can also take supplements like vitamin E (Evion - 400mg). It also helps better lubrication. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
