Suggest Ways To Remove Splinter From The Foot

I got a large splinter in the lateral side/almost underside of my foot. The splinter itself was about 3/4 of an inch long and about half of that imbedded in my foot. The diameter was similar to a toothpick. I was able to pull it out of my foot and I don t think any wood is left in the wound. I soaked the site in warm water with Epsom salt for half an hour and then put some antibacterial cream and a bandaid on it. But it barely bled and almost three hours after the initial puncture it s very tender to the touch and there s a firm lump forming under/around the wound. No redness, no heat, no pus. I m just really worried because I need to be on my feet for my job.

Hello,

As you have removed splinter from the foot, now you need to prevent any infection owing to an open wound in your foot. Thorough cleaning of the wound with soap and running water. Injection tetanus toxoid intramuscular injection. Tab. Chymoral Forte to reduce the swelling at wound. Tab. Aceclofenac or Ibuprofen to reduce pain. Topical antimicrobial treatments, including antimicrobial dressings (e.g. silver, iodides), super-oxidized aqueous solutions, zinc hyaluronate, silver sulphadiazine.

If wound gets infected with fever and pus, oral antibiotics may be needed. Warning signs you must not ignore but see a doctor as soon as possible are high fever, large amounts of pus at the wound site, swelling of the foot or leg or severe pain that doesn't relieve with pain medication.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. John Chacko's  Response
Hi,

The foreign body must be removed entirely because it can lead to a few complications such as infection or granuloma. If there is a lump felt in the area, I suggest you see a doctor to ensure there is no remnant of the foreign body in the foot. This is especially true if you are a diabetic or peripheral vascular disease.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. John Chacko, Orthopedic Surgeon
