Suggest Ways To Rule Out A Concussion

Hi there, I play volleyball and my teammate accidentally elbowed me in the bridge of my nose and I was taken out of the game and cleared for a concussion with no symptoms other than a little nose pain. Today however, in the afternoon, I had a nosebleed for the first time in my life and I am currently experiencing temple and mid forehead pressure. The sides and bridge of my nose also hurt on touch. What s going on? Is this serious? What should I do?

Hi,

Cannot say in your particular case, but generally, frontal pressure is a sinus problem. Even a small bleed into them will cause problems that could easily become permanent. an Ear Nose and throat specialist would advise.

Concussion cannot be ruled out and while we know that having two or more of them prior to full healing can be fatal and probably usually causes significant brain damage, we have no idea when the danger period stops and if the stopping is a yes/no or merely a less likelihood of death and less brain damage. But we can say when it certainly is a risk.

Signs would be changed in behavior, migraine-like symptoms of wanting to avoid stimulation of all sorts including light and noise, headache, stroke-like symptoms, nausea/vomiting. But even if no concussion, sinus problems happen all the time with frontal pressure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman, Addiction Medicine Specialist
