Suggest Ways To Wean Off Doxepin

I Have been told by my NP that I should get off Doxepin 75mg as she feels that is is not good for my heart. I have taken it for about 30 years as I had severe depression. I now have been taking 10 MG Lexepro for about 9 years with the doxepin and recently needed to go to 20 mg. My perscription insurance company also want me to stop taking it. I have not taken it for 3 nights although I do not sleep as well I still feel ok. So maybe I have been on too many meds. I took care of my husband for 9 years at home after his stroke so I was under a lot of stress. He passed away in August so a lot of pressure is off me.. How do you feel about stopping the doxepin just like that. Is that not wise since I have been taking it so long?c

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

I would say it is not wise to interrupt it in such an abrupt manner. While some withdrawal issues may be mitigated by taking Lexapro, it would still be recommended to lower the dosage gradually, say by 25mg every two weeks until complete interruption.

However, withdrawal effects may vary between patients. If already some days have gone by and you feel ok despite the abrupt interruption then you should be fine, I would leave it at that and not restart at a lower dose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
