Surprised To Be Pregnant After Being On Pill, Not Taking Prenatal Vitamins. Suggestions?

Hi. I recently took a home pregnancy test and found out I am pregnant. As I was on the pill , this came as a surprise to me and I had not been taking prenatal vitamins . I am getting nervous anout this and am wondering what you have to say. Also, is there such a concept of making up vitamins? For example, taking extra prenatal vitamins for the days that I missed? Thanks! -Malka

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I understand that you are worried about the fact that you have not taken any prenatal vitamins so far. Usually folic acid is the important vitamin which pregnant women are advised to take in the first three months, in order to reduce the risk of birth defects.

Don't worry much about not taking this so far since it is not uncommon for the pregnancy to be unexpected and get detected a little late.. I would suggest that you start taking folic acid supplements right away. To answer your second question, it is not necessary to take extra doses to make up for the missed days. Just take your regualr dily doses from now onwards and don't worry. All will be fine.

Wish you all the best.
