Swelling In Ears. What Is The Cause?

Every once in a while I wake up with my ear all swollen. This started a few years ago and probably happens once every few months. Never multiple days in a row. And the swelling usually goes away fairly quickly maybe with an hour or two. Any idea what this is or what could be causing this? Please help this is frustrating and can be painful!
