Swelling In The Hips After Falling From Stairs, Painful If Palpated Directly. Advice?

Two weeks ago I fell down our stairs and hit my left buttock on the edge of the stair. I had considerable swelling at the time which morphed into huge nasty bruises (I still have about 1/2 the bruising). I used ice at first and since have used heat and Arnica 3x a day. It is much improved but I still have a lump at the impact site. The swelling has steadily improved but through internet searches I have found some that said it never went away?!? The lump is still painful if I palpate it directly but otherwise causes no discomfort.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi
It could be collected blood called haematoma.
It will be reduced spontaneously in course of time.
I prefer antibiotic to prevent infection ,anti inflammatory tablet to my patients.
Nothing to worry.
If you have any doubt, get an ultrasound of that area and confirm the diagnosis.
Hope it will report as haematoma.
Wish you speedy recovery
Regards

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

I suspect that the swelling could be a HEMATOMA (blood clot). These will generally resolve within 3-6 weeks spontaneously without any issues.

In Diabetic persons, there is a chance for the hematomas to get infected. Simple pressure bandage application over the swollen area will cause a reduction in size over a period of time. Moist heat fomentation will also help in resolution of the hematoma.

If you are concerned, approach a General surgeon for his opinion.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
