Symptoms Of Paranoid Schizophrenia, Alcoholic, What Can Be Done?
My son has had paranoid schizophrenic symptoms for a few years, but has not been officially diagnosed and, therefore, cannot qualify for SSI. He now refuses to go to doctors at all because he doesn t trust them. He lives alone now in GA and I am supporting him because he can t work. He is 26 and no longer covered under my medical insurance. He also is abusing alcohol. I m very concerned for his mental and physical health, but don t have the money to get him ongoing treatment even if he would go. What can I do to get him help?

Though your son refuses to get himself treated and is also dependent on you for his expenses, the best you can do for him is to get him started on treatment. Once he has been on medicines for some time, he will not only be able to start working but also will be more amenable to following the doctor's instructions. It can also be expected that his alcohol intake will also decline once his psychotic symptoms improve. If you cannot afford to see a psychiatrist, you may find a GP who will be willing to prescribe an antipsychotic. In my opinion, you should tell your son that he must get himself treated if he wishes you to continue supporting him financially.
