my father is 94-has type 2 diabetes , high blood press.& cholesterol tendency, a pacemaker and heart issues, bad kidneys-doctor still has him on metformin and dismisses his fatigue as old age-over 6 months since lab work for bun-anemia etc sayws at his age they don t do tests much anymore-also denied my mother script for diab. test strips= also not needed so frequently - how wrong is he?
Hi,
There are multiple problem at the age 94 years but he needs to take medication regularly as far as metformin use in renal failure has limitations at levels >1.7mg%(>15 micromols/dl). So check renal function as sometimes it may cause lactic acidosis, avoid hypoglycemia that is low blood sugar if kidney problem is more other medicine to keep sugar level may be used. You may see a Nephrologist and Cardiologist for opinion.
