I had a visit to the ultrasound clinic to confirm pregnancy and also to explain why I've been getting abdominal pains similar to menstrual cramps which are increasing. I also have polycystic ovaries, hence the reason of my concern. The report is as follows: A single intrauterine gestational sac is seen implanted in the endometrium . No yolk sac or live embryo is seen within the gestational sac. Gestational sac size is suggestive of a 6 weeks 6 days gestation. An hypoechoic avascular mass of 21 x 8 mm diameters is seen in the fundal endometrium. This mass has appearances consistent with the presence of an haematoma. A right polycystic ovary is seen. A corpus luteal cyst is seen in the left ovary.
The cervix appears normal. Internal cervical os appears closed.
Recommend repeat examination in 1 week to confirm viability of gestation.
Can you help to clear this up for me because I'm very confused?. Also to note; my last menstrual period began on the September 8th, 2013. The doctor said that I'm 7 weeks and 5 days pregnant. He further said that maybe the fetus is very small and hasn't developed as yet or the fetus did develop and something went wrong. Does this mean I'm having a miscarriage? Is the doctor trying to scam me by not explaining this to me and recommending a repeat visit? Can there be no sign of life at 7 weeks and 5 days pregnant? Please Help

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
HI, Your last menses were on 8th sept.So the counting seems to start from the 8Th sept making it 7 weeks pregnancy, While conception can take place between 10 to 16Th day of periods. You being a patient of PCOD, it may be even later. The heart activity & fetal poles are seen when the embryo is 6 weeks old. So, it worthwhile to wait for the next scan which should be diagnostic. Please believe your doctor. The pregnancies are precious in PCOD cases, It becomes cofuzing to diagnose, due to inpredictble ovulation. Please give him due time & you can always have a discussion with your treating doctor/ second opinion to satisfy your doubts. Thanks
