Hello, My question is a general one. I have an underactive thyroid condition with a slight right sided swelling ( goitre ) and i currently have twelve monthly blood checks. My prescription is 100 mg thyroxin daily. I am 76 years in September and would like to learn more about the condition, how it affects skin, weight, & temperament etc., and what can i do ( diet wise ) to make improvements to my health ?
Hello Mrs. Ann
Thank you for getting in touch with us. As I see, you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and are taking thyroxin. Hypothyroidism can affects individuals in variety of ways. Many patients complain of being more sensitive to cold, depression, dry or pale skin, increase in weight, weakness, depression, constipation, brittle nail etc. One thing to note is that you should not stop taking medication when you feel better. Many patients do that and the disease the recurs. With proper medication, hypothyroidism can be easily managed. As you must be knowing, thyroid medicines are best taken on an empty stomach before food. Hope this helped.
