Urine Test Done. What Does The Findings In Results Mean?

My last urine test was 4/11/13. Results: WBC Esterase +3; Occult Blood, +1; Microscopic exam: Epithelial cells - non renal >10; Renal, 0-10; crystals - present; Bacteria - Moderate. I am 78, in good health, have an IVC filter. My white blood cells have shown high for years - especially since I got the filter. My bladder is outside - +3. It was examined and the tube from bladder was examined and ok. Your thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi and thanks for the query,

The presence of a positive esterase result is very suggestive of a urinary tract infection. Considering the fact you had a filter bladder, it is an additional risk factor for urinary tract infections. The most appropriate thing to do no is getting a urine culture and sensitivity testing done to obtain the actual antibiotics that could capable to treat the given infection eventually identified. This is very important for follow up and assessing the efficiency of the treatment. A clinical review to ascertain other predisposing conditions to urinary infections like diabetes should be carefully considered.

I suggest you consult your primary care physician for a proper clinical review.

Best regards,

Bain LE, MD.
