Using Depoprovera Shot. Started Spotting, Heavy Bleeding. Advised To Take The Shot. Will It Work?

I have been on the depoprovera shot for almost a yr without any problems I recently started to spot 2 wks ago and last Monday I started a very heavy period...my dr said I didn't have to wait until my next shot nov 11- nov 25 that I can take it today and it should stop the bleeding.. my ? is how long before it actually stops and will it work I had a full ob/gyn exam in march as well as a pelvic ultrasound no problems....I have always had problems with my period and the depo is the only thing at is stopping it....im 42yo light smoker and don't drink
