Veins In Left Arm, Suddenly Engorged And Painful. What Could Be The Cause?

Hi, now and again the veins in my left arm mostly would suddenly become engorged and painful. The veins could very clearly been seen. This would last for about 1 minute. Then as quickly as this appeared it would disappear. This used to happen to me quite often in my late teenage years. I had actually forgotten about it. I am now 3. What could be the cause?
