Want To Try Marijuana For Sleeping, On Medicines For BP, High Cholesterol. History Of Congestive Heart Failure. Suggestion?

I would like to try marijuana for sleeping. I am on divan and my blood pressure is normal and I am on a statin to prevent high cholesterol . 5 years ago I had a fib due to my thyroid going hyperactive I had congestive heart failure 3 times and was hospitalized. I had my thyroid removed and since then I have had no problem. I go to my cardiologist every 6 months and get regular blood work. Would it be alright if I ate some weed before bed to help me sleep? I don t want to take sleeping pills every night.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi there ~

I understand your concerns. I do not believe that marijuana helps with sleeping. It is a substance that would give you very many kinds of side effects including the initial false feeling of having low anxiety, due to its hallucinogenic effect. I also believe that you need medications for BP and high cholesterol that you are taking. However with a history of congestive heart failure, I strongly advise you to quit marijuana as it might not be good for your cardiac health. I also believe that you need to consult a psychiatrist to help with insomnia or any other sleep problems that you may be having. There are many medications to help with the sleep problems and you do not necessarily have to take the marijuana or the sleeping pills on a regular basis. Your doctor should help explain the alternatives and sleep hygiene that will help naturally with sleep.

I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!
