What Advice Can You Offer For Fatty Liver, Elevated ALT, BILT, BILD Levels, And Medication Changes From Atorvastatin To Ruvastatin?

I am amale aged 48Yrs. I used to drink alcohol but stopped 3 months ago when I started feeling frequent palpitations especially when I lie down on bed using my right side. I was requested to do liver US, ECG & Echo. The US revealed that my liver was now 15.3 beyond the normal size but both ECG and Echo were found to be normal. All in all I was told that I had a fatty liver and I was put on Livolin and Atorvastatin. After 3months of these medications Yesterday I repeated the above test and am told the liver is at 14.8 but what is worrying me is that my ALT, BILT, BILD have all raised beyond their normal ranges. My Dr has now replaced Atorvastatin with Ruvastatin. My question is what advise can you give me. Thanks.

Hello,

Follow a healthy lifestyle and a liver-friendly diet. Small amounts of alcohol can also worsen liver inflammation and fatty liver. Full avoidance will help liver cells to repair. If you have already taken the most important step of quitting alcohol, it's good. You have not mentioned your high cholesterol level, due to which your treating doctor prescribed you Statins to help lower cholesterol, which can indirectly benefit fatty liver. But, in some cases, statins can worsen liver enzyme levels. That can be a reason for your elevated levels. Consult with your treating doctor.

Rosuvastatin is often better tolerated by the liver in sensitive individuals. Control obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol level. Do regular walking and exercises. Do exercises under the observation of a physical therapist. If diabetic, control your sugar level at all costs. Avoid taking food that are high in sugars, processed carbs, trans fats, etc. Since ALT is elevated, it is indicative of liver cell damage. Elevated BILT and BILD is indicative of impaired liver processing or bile flow.

To help your liver function better, switch to eating boiled food for 4-6 months. Boiled food is healthy, nutritive and tasty. It will help your liver repair faster. Adopt a Mediterranean-style diet, including well-boiled whole grains, legumes, vegetables, lean meat and steamed small fish. Take nuts and dried fruits, fresh fruits, and berries. Chew them well before swallowing. You are allowed only olive oil; it is very healthy. You can add a dash of extra virgin olive oil to your food or shallow fry lean meat or small fish in olive oil for taste.

Avoid taking sugary drinks, white rice, white bread, processed carbs, red meats and saturated fats. Avoid taking fried and fast food. Never take packaged food; only fresh food, veggies and fruits are allowed. Take green tea (it has antioxidants), turmeric (is anti-inflammatory) and coffee (in moderation will protect the liver).

Exercise helps reduce liver fat. Do one kilometer walking twice daily in the morning and evening. Start with half a kilometer and slowly increase it. At least 30 minutes of exercise per day under a physical therapist is a must. Doing 5 days per week of brisk walking or cycling will make you healthy and fit. Take liver tonics and digestive tablets to enhance digestive function and for relief from indigestion and gas.

After following this strict schedule for a month, you should get a repeat test done. You will be happy with the result. Get tests done after 30-45 days until LFT comes to normal. Do continue to follow the same lifestyle so that your liver fully recovers without getting back to your old lifestyle. It’s highly possible to reverse the damage and bring liver markers back to normal over the next 6–12 months. Be patient and gentle with yourself; do not go for excessive weight loss once your liver enzymes come to normal.

Hope I have answered your question. Take care.
