What Am I At Risk For Due To Cerclage Stitch And Pregnancy?
I m a 45-yr. old, 270-lb. woman (5 10 ), who is 19 wks. pregnant. I ve miscarried 2X yrs. ago, have a much-deteriorated cervix, & was not expecting to get pregnant (hence, no prenatal vits./mins.). Just got a cerclage stich done yesterday. What am I at risk for? What are possible poor outcomes for the fetus?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. - Cerclage stitching is a procedure where a loose/ damaged mouth of uterus is stitched to strengthen the mouth of uterus .. prevents abortion/ premature delivery (& favors maintainace of pregnancy). - After cerclage stitch, patient is advised to take bed rest/ avoid physical or mental stress/ avoid coitus for few days to few weeks ( depending on patient's condition ) - A close observation of the patient by regular check ups/ regular medication as per need .. is a must. - This stitch is removed as the baby becomes viable( in 9th month).. so as to allow delivery. * if you follow your doctor's instructions strictly, you would reach full term of pregnancy & get a healthy baby . * The only risk to baby is premature delivery... which also can be managed by Premature baby care when baby has reached 7 months of pregnancy. So please don't worry. Be positive. Thanks.
