What Are Abdominal Pain, Bloody Watery Stools And Bile Discharge Suggestive Of?

Good evening, My best friend was just admitted for the 2nd time in less than one week. She experienced severe pain w/bloody watery stool. She was told she has Colitis; however, she became worse with terrible abdominal pain and is now excreting bile. They can t do a Colonoscopy due to the risk of tearing/rupturing her colon; therefore, exploratory surgery is on the table. Is it possible something more is going on? Thank you.

Hello,

The abdomen pain, bloody water stools with bile discharge is indicative of severe disorder of digestive system mostly small intestine and biliary tree in patient of colitis. Though the colonoscopy is not possible or feasible due to possible risk of rupture, a CT scan of abdomen & pelvis may have been performed for deciding the need of surgery if the patient condition is partially stable also.

Review with your doctor, all available reports of your friend, which will help to co relate precisely on clinical grounds about the need of surgery and its possible pros and cons. Till that time, I can surely tell that his condition is in such position that substantial damage has been done to small with or without large bowel and there are multiple modes of surgery as resection and anastomosis, ileostomy and others.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
