Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes absolutely. My wife is 57 years of age. My wife is on LEVOTHYROXIN. Unfortunately, she is currently afraid to contact her doctor for a refill, largely because we don t have the money for an office visit. So, how dangerous is this, without her thyroid medication? Also, I would very much like to know by her not taking her thyroid medication, is this a probable cause, because she is tired all the time, and for no apparent reason?Concerned husband
Levothyroxine is being prescribed as a 'replacement therapy' for the treatment of hypothyroidism ('underactive thyroid) and it needs to be taken on regular basis to control the disease.
Upon discontinuing levothyroxine patients may experience all the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism for which levothyroxine is used to treat like feeling tired, cold, dry skin, weight gain, slow heart, puffy face, fatigue, muscle weakness and constipation.
I would therefore advise you to consult her doctor for proper evaluation and to continue the treatment as before.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
