What Are Recurring Pain In The Throat And Loss Of Voice Suggestive Of?

Hi about five weeks ago I lost my voice for about 3 days, then a cold set in, a few days later the left side of my throat started hurting so bad I could not talk or swallow. A few days later I called my doc to see if she had been seeing strep going around, she gave me a z-pack. It did not help at all, I m still having issues. I m in menopause so I have a fan on me at night, I wake up with my mouth so dry I can hardly swallow, I tend to be a mouth breather. I talked to my doc again and she said she thinks I have irritated the membranes in my throat, I have tried swishing with listerine, it mostly bothers me in the morning and at night, periodically I feel like a stabbing feeling. I bought a humidifier and I have been running it every night. I ve got myself pretty worked up, I have anxiety and I m having some not so good thoughts. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to have a recurrent cold followed by throat infection & inflammation of vocal cords to affect your voice.

This can be allergic ,viral or bacterial. Pathological tests like blood tests, throat swab culture & sensitivity test would help in pinpointing the cause followed by an expert ENT specialist's advise for specific treatment.

Along with the expert advise. You would need to have saline gargles & vapour inhalation regularly/give rest to vocal cords by avoiding more speaking/shouting/singing, avoiding exposure to known allergens/chronic sufferer of throat infection.

Drinking warm water, avoiding cold, sour or spicy-oily food would help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
