What Are The Adverse Effects Of Leaving A Tampon Inside The Vagina?

I'm concerned about long term issues I may have because I made the mistake of leaving a tampon in for a serious length of time. I was aware this was possibly happening, but could not detect or find the foreign object. During sex, my husband said he could tell the tampon was still there. Then I found it. It was 3 weeks later. I'm 44 years old, work in the medical field, and am very cognoscente. I can't explain this other than when I was looking I looked too quickly and assumed too quickly everything was normal.



What, if any, kinds of risks, signs or symptomolgy should I watch for in this embarrassing situation?
