What Are The Adverse Effects Of Taking Morphine During Pregnancy?

What are the risks of taking morphine during pregnancy? My daughter is prescribed for it s use because of chronic pain and a spinal cavernoma and is now about 6 weeks pregnant. I m concerned for both her and her baby and though doctors are aware and have no other solutions for her pain management I am wondering what the risks are. She is on the morphine as a replacement for oxycondone.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Morphine at therapeutic doses during pregnancy does not cause any harmful effects on the growing baby however, the newborn babies can develop withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, morphine should be used with caution, especially in higher doses in late pregnancy when the new born baby should be observed carefully in the neonatal period for any signs of withdrawal (neonatal abstinence syndrome).

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
