What Are The Benefits And Side Effects Of Spinal Fusion?

My husband needs to have a spinal fusion done. Has had 2 surgical consults, 1 with a neurosurgeon and 1 with an orthopedic surgeon, area of concern is L5-S1. Neurosurgeon wants to anterior approach-groin area. Orthopedic surgeon states that approach is too invasive, Recommends incision side of abdomen through large muscle mass. Where do we research pros and cons of each approach-Please advise

Hello! Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

Cons of anterior approach-

1) Major vessels and internal organ injury.
2) Cons of lateral approach- large muscle mass, difficulty in dissection and less of visual field.

Let them speak to each other and offer both the options clearly.

Hope that clarifies your concern. Thank you for the query.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohd Adil, General & Family Physician
