What Are The Chances Of Herpes Transmission Through Saliva?
Hi, in the past I have been tested for herpes 1 and 2 and I got a positive result. I shared a piece of candy the other day with my son that I had in my mouth. Not even thinking about the fact that I have herpes. We used to do this all the time, just like wiping small areas of his face with a little saliva on my finger, but it occurred to me that I could have transmitted this to my child through my saliva being on the candy. Is this possible I am so worried.....
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Herpes labialis infection can occur when the virus comes into contact with oral mucosal tissue or abraded skin of the mouth. Therefore, it is possible that the virus may get transmitted through your saliva coming into direct contact with his oral mucosa but this is not very likely to happen through intact skin of the face. The chances of infecting are more if you were having active cold sores at that time. Of course you need to be careful with this type of contact in future.
