What Are The Consequences Or A Positive Downs Syndrome During Pregnancy?

Hi...I am a 34 year old mother of a 13 year old daughter and a 7 year old son..beautiful children!! I am currently 18 weeks with my 3rd child...I have just completed my Harmony blood work for down syndrome. I had previously had bloodwork done that came back positive for the pattern of down syndrome. I am at a loss for words as this is completly new to me and my fiance ...neither of us have anyone in either of our families with this. I am aware that this is something that happens during conseption...there is an extra chromosome. 47 instead of 46. I am awaiting my results from the Harmony bloodwork and just trying to understand down syndrome...to educate myself just incase it comes back positive again.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Down syndrome is typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features, and mild to moderate intellectual disability. The average IQ of a young adult with Down syndrome is 50, equivalent to the mental age of an 8- or 9-year-old child, but this varies widely.
So you should be very careful regarding this syndrome.
Take care
