What Are The Dietary Restrictions While Taking Plavix?

Hi, my husband is 65 yo and had a stent put in his major coronary artery yesterday. He had 75% occlusion. He was prescribed Plavix. I know with Warfarin there are diet restrictions, specifically for Vita K. Are there any diet restrictions for Plavix? He is to take it for a year. Thanks, concerned wife

Hi,

Plavix is a great anti-platelet agent. The most important food to avoid while taking Plavix is GRAPEFRUIT JUICE, it interacts with the enzymes that breakdown the Plavix and can make the blood thinning effect much greater causing you to bleed. Also, avoid any alcohol use as there are side effects with this and Plavix as well. In addition you also need to avoid taking the following medications while you are on Plavix: Tagamet, Prozac, Nexium, and Prilosec.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
