What Are The Long Term Side Effect Of Zopiclone Tablets?

I am taking a lose dosage Zopiclone tablet (3.75 mg) to help me fall asleep. I am 65 years old and have been
taking this same prescription for 5-7 years. Is there a risk factor to this? My pharmacist says I should not be concerned. what do you think and would you suggest an alternative. I am a very light sleeper and short of sleeping in a different room than my husband (which I do not want to do) I cannot seem to fall asleep if I do not take this pill.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Zopiclone is a drug that belongs to Z-drugs of hypnotics. The drug is a relatively safe drug for sleep if we compare this to other sleep medicines. Though it is considered as safe still it has potential to cause dependence and tolerance. Long term use may result in abuse potential. Long term drug use may cause increased risk of cognitive impairment and this may cause significant memory problems especially after 60 years of age. So in my opinion you should consult a doctor and try to cut down the use of this drug. Other drugs like Trazodon, Mirtazapine etc can be used for sleep and these are also free of dependence risk and abuse potential. Please consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
