What Are The Repercussions After DXA Scan While Having Titanium Breast Marker?

Hi thanks for being there to assist. I had a titanium clip inserted in my breast after a breast biopsy last year. I forgot I had it and had a total body DXA scan performed on me. I totally forgot to tell the technician I had the clip in my breast. Can this scan that was performed affect me or get me sick in any way with the metal from the clip?

Hi,

It all depends on the weight of the metal on the clip. Definitely metal has its effect on the reports of Total Body Mass, Bone Mineral Content & Soft Tissue Mass. With the presence of metal in the body, it may give a false increased reading of these parameters even up to 3% depending on the weight of metal. However, no effect has been reported on the body with dexa scan in the presence of metal in the body.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
