What Are The Repercussions Of Overdosing On Atenolol?

My 15 year old daughter took 25 mg of her atenolol at 11:30 am and forgot she took it, so she took another 25 mg at 1:50 pm. It is now 2:04pm. I called urgent care and they said to drink lots of water and monitor heart rate for 24 hours. Should something more be done?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Atenolol is a cardioselective ('heart selective') beta-adrenergic blocker commonly prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, angina pectoris and other conditions.

Repercussions due to its overdose include severe hypotension, bradycardia, hypothermia, arrhythmias, hypoglycemia, and seizures.

The repercussions may range from asymptomatic to shock.

Because of the potential for rapid deterioration, she should be seen immediately in the emergency room of a nearby hospital for appropriate management like stomach lavage and administration of activated charcoal and specific treatment for the repercussions if any she has developed would be undertaken with closed monitoring.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
