What Are The Repercussions Of Taking Emergency Contraceptive Pills?

I am a woman 22 years of age, is it hamful if I take the emergency contraception one time? Me and my boyfriend were fooling around so we didn t have protection and it just happened. He didn t ejaculalte though. Should I still be worried about pregnancy? I had read that pre-ejaculation can also cause it. So should I just take the emergency contraception just to be on the safer side? Please advice.

Hello dear,
Thank you for your question.

Emergency contraception is widely accepted as a safe and effective way to prevent undesired pregnancies. So it is perfectly safe for you to use it, but don't forget that emergency contraception must be used only in special circumstances and cannot be used as a routine form of contraception. Also emergency contraception doesn't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.

As for any other drugs there are some common side effects, which may include:
1-Irregular bleeding
2-Breast tenderness
3-Dizzness and headaches
4-Stomach upset and nausea
These side effects are considered minor and will pass after 24 hours. Make sure to read carefully the leaflet of the brand you use.

There is an especially fertile period during your menstrual cycle which can increase the chances of getting pregnant. It usually starts five days before your ovulation and lasts approx. 5 days. Pre-ejaculation is also to be considered as a factor which can contribute to pregnancy.

You should take the pill without delay as soon as possible inside a 72 hour interval of time after unprotected sex, in order to maximise the ability of the drug to be effective. I always strongly suggest my patients to take a pregnancy test 14 days after the pill just to confirm that the drug was effective in preventing the pregnancy.

I hope this helped.
Don't hesitate to contact me, if you have further further questions.
All the best,
Dr. Alma
