What Are The Risks Of Taking I-pill Followed By Unprotected Sex?

Hi, My wife is around 29 and last night we had an unprotected sex and don t wish to conceive now. My queries are:- 1. i know ipill is about 89% chance of getting pregnancy avoided, my wife has her periods starting from 18th - by when she ll be able to know that she is out from the risk of being pregnant. 2. Do you see some side-effect considering her age due to ipill - just ensuring the future pregnancy is not affected. 3. IF you can suggest some after-effects of the taking this ipill. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

1. The ipill if taken within the first 24 hours of sexual intercourse is about 98% effective in preventing conception. She can go about a home pregnancy test using an early morning urine sample about 2 weeks from the date of the sexual contact to help confirm/rule out/suspect pregnancy

2. The only side effect is menstrual irregularities and inter-menstrual bleed which should also subside within 2-3 cycles

3. No issues with age and no effect on future fertility. If at all the menstrual irregularities last longer then please seek medical attention

Best wishes.
