Hi,
Alendronate and Reclast are medications used to treat and prevent
osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones become weak and brittle. Both medications work by slowing down the breakdown of bone tissue and increasing
bone density. However, they have different methods of administration and different recommended dosages.
The common side effects of alendronate include stomach pain, heartburn, nausea,
constipation, diarrhea, gas, headache, and muscle or joint pain. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own, but in rare cases, more serious side effects can occur, such as severe bone, joint, or
muscle pain, swelling or numbness in the jaw, and eye problems.
Reclast is administered as an intravenous (IV) infusion once a year, while alendronate is taken orally once a week. The infusion is typically given in a doctor's office or clinic, and the medication is delivered directly into a vein in the arm. Reclast can cause side effects such as flu-like symptoms, fever, headache, and muscle or joint pain. Rare but serious side effects include kidney problems and a type of
jawbone disease called
osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). ONJ can cause pain, swelling, and infection in the jaw, and it can be difficult to treat.
It's important to discuss the benefits and risks of both options with your doctor, taking into consideration your age, medical history, and overall health. Your dentist's concerns about TMJ should also be taken into account. If you decide to take alendronate, make sure to follow the instructions carefully and take the medication as directed. If you decide to have the Reclast infusion, make sure to inform your doctor of any side effects you experience during or after the infusion.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
