What Are The Side Effects Of IP6?

I had a minor heart attack last year, and i had two stents placed in. One of my other arteries is 50 per cent blocked according to my cardiologist. A friend suggested IP6. I asked him to check this out, but he never did. Are there any side effects that could hurt me if I take this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

I can understand your concern regarding the safety of IP6.

IP-6 (Inositol hexaphosphate) is a vitamin-like substance available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement and antioxidant claimed to be useful for boosting the immune system, treating anemia, and preventing heart disease and kidney stones. However, there is no sufficient evidence to substantiate its usefulness on clinical trials.

Generally, it is considered to be safe however it may cause nausea, flatulence or stomach upset. Other common side effects include headache, dizziness and fatigue.

Hope to have answered your queries.
Best regards.
