What Are The Side Effects Of Loestrin 24?

My daughter, 23 is on Loestrin 24 (about 8 months) and has five pills left in this cycle. She just experienced bright red blood, not a lot but enough that she is using a tampon. She was previously on ortho tri-cyclen lo and had several random episodes of break through bleeding. She says this bleeding is different. Her breakthrough before was a darker color and more spotting than actual bleeding. Does this sound like breakthrough bleeding and should she see her ob-gyn?
