What Are The Side Effects Of Zen?

my son has been under medication for having fits problems; he has been consuming Zen 300 mg twice a day for the last 8 years.His mode of delivery is Forcep delivery.He was kept under observation for 72 hours in neo natal care.He experienced his first convulsion in the year 2003.With the consultation of a neurologist,he has been under medication without any interruption,At present he is 22 years old.Can you please advise whether to continue with drug ;has there been side effect of this drug?

I can understand your concern. Zen 300 is Carbamazepine and the drug is an anti seizure drug. In most of the cases of seizures it is advised to the patients that they should continue to take drugs for at least 3-5 years post seizure control. If his seizures are under control and he is not having any problems then the drug can be discontinued. But since Carbamazepine is an anti seizure drug so the drug doses should be tapered gradually over 6 months. Rapid dose reduction or abrupt stoppage of drug might result in withdrawal seizures. Please consult a doctor and ask for reduction of the doses.
