What Are The Side Effects Of Anesthesia?

I keep reading over and over about anesthesia is riskier for older patients? WHY? If an older patient has heart disease or a myriad of other ailments, HOW does having anesthesia make them be at a higher risk? Does their older body make them more suspectible somehow to CNS toxicity?
