What Are The Side Effects Of Long Term Use Of Omega3?

I ve just read that Omega 3 is now bad for you because it can eventually send your Immune System into Overload causing Acne & other ill effects losing it s Anti-inflammatory Properties. I ve been advised by my Opthalmologist to take it 3 yrs ago for chronic dry irritated eyes w/dandruff in my eyebrows & around my eyelashes beds. He also said that it might help my Arthritis & other Inflammatory Conditions. The article also suggested that Cod Liver Oil is better for you. What do you think? Is it safe to continue the Omega 3 or should I switch to Cod Liver Oil. Unfortunately I can t ask the Dr who put me on this because the hospital moved the Dr s out of the building into outside private offices & I can t remember my Dr s name.

Hello,

You have been advised Omega 3 fatty acids to be taken for 3 years by your treating ophthalmologist. Long time used of any medicine cause side effects. Omega 3 fatty acids if taken in excessive amount will cause side effects like increased AST, increased ALT, trans aminase, insomnia, dizziness, headache, hypersensitivity, hive, itching, skin rash, dizziness, tightness in the chest, etc.

Omega 3 fatty acid or Cod liver oil should be taken in quantities to just supplement the deficiency in the body. Regular intake of medicines or supplements causes adverse effects. Taking omega 3 fatty acid in the natural form, including it in the regular diet is the best way to help maintain the best heart and mental health and to keep ailments due to inflammation under check.

Stay away from addictions if any and do regular walking and stretch exercises. Avoid anxiety and stress. You have not informed anything regarding your present or past medical history or ailment. If you take Cod liver oil, get clinically evaluated by a GP, gets tests and investigations done to find out how much your body needs it so that you do not take an overdose.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
