What Are The Side Effects Of Remeron?

My Dr. prescribed Remeron for insomnia. I read that it has negative side affects, such as cravings for sweets and weight gain. I am a 44 year old female, and I suggested to my Dr. the insomnia might be hormones - I have 4 older sisters that all experienced severe insomnia during peri/menopause. 1) would going on the pill help regulate and 2) and/or can I take 1 dose of Remeron as needed (like an Ambian) or is this something to take daily?
