What Are The Side Effects Of Smoking Weed During Pregnancy?

I smoked weed a couple of times a month up til 29 weeks pregnant. I m not a bad person. I just have severe bipolar and was taken off my psychiatric medications. The weed helped me a lot to cope. Will my baby test positive for weed?? I live in Connecticut and I know they test newborns. I don t want to lose my son.

Hi,

Weed smoking during pregnancy may cause low birth weight, premature birth or small head. But these features may not be present in all babies, and depends on the cumulative dose taken and the time of pregnancy (more effects when taken in first trimester).

Anyhow, if ultrasound and Doppler parameters are normal for gestational age, we need not worry now. If stopped at 29 weeks, it's unlikely to be positive when tested after term delivery. Your doctor will discuss in more details.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
