What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Amoxicillin During Pregnancy?
I had a urine test at 25 weeks pregnant and they say I need to take amoxycillin due to stomach bacteria and will have to have penicillin during labour. I don't want to take anything as I believe it all has an effect on my baby, so what if I don't do either of what they say?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Amoxicillin is commonly used in pregnancy. Most studies have found no link between Amoxicillin and poor pregnancy outcome. So, if your doctor recommends to use this drug, don't worry.
It is important that bacterial infections in pregnancy are treated early and with an antibiotic that is likely to work. If a bacterial infection is left untreated it can result in serious harm to both you and baby. Treatment with Amoxicillin may, therefore be the safest option for you and your unborn baby.
Anyway, I want to underline that when deciding whether to take amoxicillin during pregnancy it is important to weigh up how necessary Amoxicillin is to your health against any possible risks to you or your baby, some of which may depend on how many weeks pregnant you are. Your doctor is the best person to help you decide what is right for you and your baby. For this reason, my advice is to meet physically your doctor and discuss with him the possible risks and decide the best thing to do in your case.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Elona Xhardo
