What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Aricept And Galantamine Together?
What are the side affects when Aricept and Galantamine are taken orally ? The patient 88 years old. Dementia patient taking 10 mg. Aricept orally for 12 years w/o problem. Galantamine introduced. In a 3 months time patient develops urinary tract infection, painful urination, a rash on shoulder that wont go away, weight loss, loss of appetite, in pain found in fetal position, confusion, sleep more and depressed. Is this normal ? Should galantamine be discontinued ?
It is suggestive of drug to drug interactions. Based on the history this gentleman seems to developed drug interactions. Taking galantamine together with Aricept can increase the blood levels or add to the side effects of either medication. This can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, increased salivation, cold sweats, slow or irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness or cramps, dizziness, headache, seizures, or breathing problems. He may need a dose adjustment of these medications or use of an alternate effective medicine while taking Aricept.
