Hi,

Abnormal sensations can sometimes be related to change in function of the nerves in the area. The abnormal function of the nerves is called neuropathy, it can be temporary or permanent. If you have been thoroughly investigated by the dermatologist and other possible causes of itching have been ruled out then this would definitely need to be considered as a possible cause.

Itching can also be due to allergies, side effect of medication, thyroid disease, kidney disease, liver disease, infection. Medications for seizures and also some medications for depression are used to treat nerve related conditions in persons who do not have either seizures or depression.

It has been found that these medicines have an effect on reducing nerve related pain or sensations. Side effects may or may not occur, some persons do not have any problems. Possible side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, change in bowel habits, headache, poor coordination. You may experience none, few or all. If you experience any problems, your doctor would suggest discontinuation.

I hope this helps. Let me know f I can assist you further.
