What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Steroid Medicines?

My 84 yr old grandfather has been taking steroids to help with the treatment of prostate cancer. He has developed these purplish spots all over his arms and hands. If anything even remotely touches them it will tear the skin and start bleeding. Is this normal?
