What Are The Side Effects On Long Term Finax Usage?

I have been prescribed Finax 1 mg every alternate day. I am 56. Is it normal to have Finax on alternate day? Also what could be the standard side effect of Finax 1 mg every 2 days? (Please note I am not talking of unusual/rare cases but standard ones if any)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for posting to HCM.

Finax tablets 1 mg contain finasteride, a type II 5α-reductase inhibitor that is used to treat male pattern baldness.

Finasteride works by specifically inhibiting the action of an enzyme 'type II 5α-reductase' which is found in hair follicles and converts the male hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for hair loss.

The most commonly reported side effects include: temporary impotence, erectile dysfunction and low libido.

Rare side effects include: breast tenderness and enlargement (gynecomastia) and itchy skin rash.

Hope the information provided answers your question.
All the best.
