What Are The Symptoms And Treatment For Under Active Thyroid?

Hi, i wonder about a under active thyroid. I was tested negative for it about 3 years ago. But i wonder if i can have developed it now? Im always really tired, havent got any energy, my period has become heavier, i have got a few dry patches on my body, my throat feels tigth, my hair has become dull. I stopped taking co-codamols in okt so i don't know if thats the reason for why i m so tied. and im also deprest but on "recovery", was taking sertalin 100mg witch i also stopped taking in okt because i got so drusy and tired on them, so i have just been thinking that my resons for feeling like this is still due to my changes but its been a time now. i have started taking b12 and d3 vitamin tablets sins beginning off jan. my tight throat could just be acid from my stomac, everything could be something other than thyroid. what should i do? many thanks and im sorry for my spelling.

Hi,

I read carefully your problems and understood quiet well your concerns. You are telling that I am always really tired, haven't got any energy, my period has become heavier, I have got a few dry patches on my body, my throat feels tight, my hair has become dull.

These looks like Hypothyroid symptoms:

May I know please that did you feel:

• Cold intolerance
• Constipation
• Depression
• Fatigue
• Muscle or joint pain
• Paleness
• Weight gain

Is there anybody in your family with thyroid problems? To be sure if you really have hypothyroid we must to know Thyroid Hormone level:

Please check :-

• Free T4 or free thyroxine index (low)
• Free T4 test (low)
• Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) (high)

And if you have these level, doctor must to treat you for hypothyoid. Common treatment for hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is Levothyroxine (Eltroxin ). The right dose depends on the TSH level.

What is most important in treating hypothyroidism is to find the right dose? It is very important that your thyroid hormone and TSH levels to checked periodically. The initial dose of thyroid hormone is carefully selected based on information such as :

• a person’s weight
• age
• other medical conditions

The best time to take thyroid hormone is probably first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This is because food in the stomach can affect the absorption of thyroid hormone. The hight TSH level are during high level of cholesterol. Please check lipidogram level : Chol. TRG, HDL, VLDL.

Normally, 4- 6 weeks after starting treatment you should check the TSH level, if it is within the normal ranges than the dose is correct, otherwise it should be corrected. My advise is to consult an endocrinologist and to repeat the thyroid tests.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to ask. I would be happy to help.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Klodiana Poshi
