Hi, I recently had unprotected sex with a new gf when we were both drunk. The next day she informed me she has genital hsv 1, but that she's on Valtrex (not sure of the dosage) and she took one earlier that day (she also said she hasn't had an outbreak in two years). That was on saturday january 8th, and I have literally been stressing out since then, I think I may have been on the verge of an anxiety attack last friday when I began to feel a "tingling" sensation at the end of my penis, Do you think I may have contracted the disease?
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
I won't rule out the possibility entirely that you may have contracted the virus. Herpes can transmit by unprotected sex with an infected partner. The risk of transmission is more during an active episode but low grade virus shedding continues even during intervening asymptomatic period. Having said that, Oral antivirals like valacyclovir do reduce the risk by interfering with viral multiplication but won't make it absolutely Zero. I suggest that you get yourself tested by blood test for herpes (HSVELISA) at appropriate interval. Herpes can be tested earliest at 2 weeks by ELISA testing. Herpes usually presents with multiple discrete painful erosions on the genital mucosa or skin. Therefore, if you notice any sores or erosions in the genital area you must get it checked with a venereologist.
