What Are The Symptoms Of A Bat Bite?

A month ago, a bat was flying around in the basement I live in. At the time I thought it was a bird or a bat, but I wasn t sure. I returned home after a weeks vacation yesterday, and the bat was dead in the floor. I think the cat killed it or messed with it after it died. I picked itt up with a paper towel and threw it outside in the woods. Now I am getting scared that I should have had it tested to be sure it was not rabid. Should I see my doctor? Could I have been bitten and not know it? What should I do? I am freaking out!!!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is better to take anti rabies shots in case of any doubt. Wild bats are a source of rabies and it is always to take vaccines in cases any suspicion. You can take the complete course of vaccines which includes four shots. Nothing much to worry as the bite is unlikely in your case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
