Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have only flown once in my life and upon ascent and desent I had the more horrific stabbing headache, which subsided when the plane was at cruising altitude or when landed. I am due to fly again next week and I am so scared of this pair again. I constantly have a runny nose and heard this may be aerosinitus? Could this be so and how can I prevent it?
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. You should be worried but not too much. Typically, sinus barotrauma is preceded by an upper respiratory tract infection or allergy. The affected person suffers a sudden sharp facial pain or headache during descent, which increases as the aircraft approaches ground level. The fluid or blood will fill the space. For prophylaxis I suggest: 1. Chewing gum – especially during takeoff and landing – will help to open enough room in your ear to allow air to pass through. Yawning and swallowing also works. 2.Saline Nasal Spray will help keep your nose moisturized. 3.Water. Drink lots of it. This all-natural medicine doesn’t just help clean out toxins; it also helps prevent any mucus from thickening. Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health.
