My husband is a chronic binge drinker, he is trying to quit. last night he went out drinking and today is having bad chest pain. He is young and otherwise healthy, very in shape, and only 36. I am wondering if he needs to go to the hospital, he is refusing, but he states he is pretty sure it is alcohol poisoning... he is drinking a lot of fluids (water and gatorade) just wondering if this is serious or if it is normal
High amount of alcohol use (like in your husband case) can damage esophagus & stomach directly and by increasing acidity/acid reflux. This damage lead to reflux spasm, pain in epigastrium/chest/throat, feeling of something in throat and vomiting.
He may need investigations like upper GI endoscopy to diagnose and treat problem. For treatment he need to stop further alcohol use and meet physician for treatment of acidity with medicines like ranitidine.
Wishing him good health and all the best. www.99doctor.com
