What Are The Symptoms Of Autism?

I have a 5 year old who was just diagnosed with autism. He has been reading since he was 2. Self taught. He s interested in music, geography, garbage trucks, Paw Patrol, Mickey Mouse and many other things. He knows his ABCs and he can count and do puzzles. He enjoys telling others about things he s interested in. He doesn t like art projects and he doesn t play well with kids his own age unless he knows them well. Then he s fine. How can he be autistic?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It may be best to speak to the psychologist who assessed and diagnosed him. There are different criteria and she or he can let you know which ones he fit into. Diagnosis depends on communication for a large part and if there are problems with communication with other children or with adults this may be the basis of the diagnosis. The criteria are available online

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
